CEO, American Century Investments
We believe market prices represent an unbiased view of the value of a business, reflecting the independent assessment by millions of investors of a company’s prospects and risks. Through prices, we believe the market tells us a lot about the expected return of individual securities.
Our investment process is based on an academically-supported, market-tested framework that aims to identify securities with higher expected returns based on their current market prices and other company financial information.
We believe price is a fundamental driver of higher expected returns, along with profitability, size, and momentum characteristics, in concert with other market considerations.
As part of our portfolio management and trading processes, we analyze whether the benefits of a trade overcome its associated costs and risks. This cost/benefit trade-off seeks to keep turnover low, as we trade only when we believe that the benefits are meaningful and eliminate noise that typically increases costs.
The result? Broadly diversified portfolios that are designed to efficiently deliver higher expected returns with low rebalancing costs, capital gains and fees. We expect to pass these savings on to our investors through lower management fees.
All Avantis Investors strategies will use the same academically sound risk/return framework uniquely designed for Avantis Investors. This allows investors to effectively and efficiently deploy them in their portfolio allocations.
Avantis Investors utilizes financial science to analyze current prices in its efforts to capture higher expected returns with well-diversified strategies managed according to an efficient, repeatable and cost sensitive process.
We believe market prices represent an unbiased view of the value of a business, reflecting millions of investors’ independent assessment of a company’s prospects and risks.
There are differences in expected returns among securities. We use financial science and current market prices to identify differences in expected returns in an effort to deliver value to our clients. Despite the complexity of the theoretical and empirical analysis and data, we do not miss the common-sense concept that underpins our approach: paying less for an expected stream of cash flows or the equity of a company means higher expected returns.
Changes in security prices imply changes in their expected returns. We use information in current prices to assess differences in expected returns among securities when deciding what to buy, hold or sell in our strategies.
We strive to keep turnover low, while maintaining the desired goal to hold securities expected to deliver higher returns. Our cost-sensitive portfolio management and trading processes are implemented efficiently based on current market information.
Fees and implementation costs reduce returns. The investment decisions in our low-fee strategies are based on current prices, avoiding the costly concentration of trades that can arise with arbitrary holding periods.
Each strategy is expressed through a portfolio diversified across a broad set of relevant securities, weighted towards positions with higher expected returns and designed to mitigate concentration risk.
We will disclose portfolio characteristics and holdings regularly to help investors make informed allocation decisions and achieve prudent diversification across companies, countries, industries and asset managers.
